shtayyeh calls on EU countries to pressure Israel to hold elections in Jerusalem

The Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Shtayyeh called European Union countries to pressure Israel to enable us to hold elections in Jerusalem, during a meeting with ambassadors, consuls and representatives of the European Union on Wednesday, in his office in Ramallah, in the presence of Finance Minister Shukri Bishara.

The Prime Minister also called on the European Union countries to be ready to monitor and supervise the election process, stressing that our people have bright experiences in the elections, whether in the legislative and presidential elections in the past or in the elections of local councils, student councils and chambers of commerce that have not stopped in the West Bank for the past years.

The Palestinian leadership has a firm political will headed by President Mahmoud Abbas to hold elections and overcome any challenges imposed by any party, because the democracy of the Palestinian people was a victim of division. Elections are our way out and our gate to protect our cause and the unity of our people," shtayyeh said.

The Prime Minister briefed the delegation on the government's performance report for the past period and the results of the measures taken by the government to achieve the gradual disengagement from the occupation economy, strengthen the national product, and promote direct trade with the world and Arab countries in particular.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister assured donors that the government reached an agreement to end the accumulated financial crisis of the Augusta-Victoria hospital and the rest of the hospitals in Jerusalem. He added that controlling the mechanism of purchasing medical services and stopping transfers to Israel would reduce the bill coming from Israel and would provide us with financial means to strengthen our national health sector

"We have also reached a solution that will end the crisis of the Jerusalem Electricity Company and the Israeli threats to cut the power to the company's concession areas through a package of measures including payments from the government as well as internal reforms in the company."

He also briefed donors on future projects that the government is working on, including the creation of a renewable energy investment fund, a quantum leap in energy in Palestine, and a development and investment bank to encourage the implementation of pilot projects and empower women and youth, as well as promote vocational education and training, through the establishment of an applied university college. This contributes to reduce unemployment among graduates.
